Building High Performing Management – Union Relationships – where to start?
Increasing international competitiveness means that companies have to demonstrate consistent improvement, advancement and efficiency in order to participate in the global economy. This means not only achieving internationally competitive safety, production, quality, and cost performance targets, but also ensuring a stable, satisfied work force.
In South Africa this is particularly pertinent, where a volatile labour relations environment is deterring investment and further weakening our economy. Now, more than ever, management should focus on maintaining productive, high performance relationships with their unions in order to ensure issues raised are quickly resolved at the lowest level.
One of the most effective ways to kickstart this process of engagement and communication is by holding a Relationships by Objectives (RBO) workshop.
What is a RBO?
Traditionally a conflict resolution method that directs unions and management towards cooperation and joint problem solving, the RBO process is used by some of the world’s top companies in order to build management-union relationships.
What does it involve?
During the facilitated workshop the parties jointly participate in a variety of activities in which they assess their current relationship, develop solutions to current issues, build a common vision for the future of the company and develop common objectives to build a more productive relationship with improved communication. The parties also agree on an action plan and assign specific responsibilities to implement and achieve the objectives that they have set.
What is expected of participants?
A RBO requires the total commitment, support and involvement of labour and management to succeed. Although there is naturally apprehension from both parties, it is remarkable to see the change that occurs in a short period of time if representatives are willing to accept criticism and engage in honest and constructive discussion.
